For years, fans have told Cloonee to “bring back the old Cloonee.” Others want him to keep changing. His first album, Are You Still You?, takes those competing requests and turns them into the whole idea: why choose one version?
Released October 6, the 16-track record pulls together the different sides of the UK producer’s sound. Cloonee has said he wanted it to include the artist he was, the one he is now and where he might go next. It’s a more interesting answer than making an entire album of throwbacks.
The guest list gives you a sense of its range. “Good Girl” joins him with Prospa and Tristan Henry; “Paradise” brings in Chris Lake and Aliyah’s Interlude; “Movimiento” features Yandel and ATLAC. Joseph Capriati, SOSA and Chris Lorenzo are in there too, while “Menealo” and “Why Does Your Love Hurt So Much?” leave him out front on his own.
One recent hit is notably absent: “Free Your Mind” with Prospa isn’t on the tracklist. So this isn’t just a collection of everything that already worked. If you came for one Cloonee era, you may leave with another favorite.
