The song first appeared as the orchestral intro to his Tomorrowland set in July. A fuller version followed at Ushuaïa Ibiza, and in late September Garrix shared a clip of himself singing it with a guitar. The finished release came out days later.

Garrix steps up to the mic

This is the second time Martin Garrix has sung solo on a record. He first sang on a release with "Angels For Each Other" in 2025, but that was alongside Indian singer Arijit Singh. "Catharina," out in March, was his first track with only his own voice on it, and "This Dream Of You" follows it.

Garrix has been open about how uncomfortable that is. "Singing is very far out of my comfort zone," he wrote in the caption of his preview clips, adding that he is excited to try new things and learn. He said the same about "Catharina," admitting he spent over a year overthinking that song before he put it out. He premiered "This Dream Of You" as his Tomorrowland intro and said he was happy to finally share it.

A producer known for other people's voices

Martin Garrix broke through as a teenager in 2013 with "Animals," an instrumental festival record, and he placed No. 2 in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll in 2025. For most of the years in between, he has been the producer behind someone else's voice. "In the Name of Love" had Bebe Rexha. "Scared to Be Lonely" had Dua Lipa. Both were built around a guest vocalist, and he kept working that way for years.

That's why his last few records stand out. "Angels For Each Other" put his voice next to Arijit Singh's, "Catharina" took the guest out altogether, and "This Dream Of You" keeps it that way. The "Catharina" video was filmed in Madeira and Amsterdam and included footage from Garrix's childhood.

How the song builds

The single opens with an orchestral swell before Garrix's voice comes in. From there it moves into the production he's known for, with light, airy textures and euphoric melodies.

He has called it a really special song for him, and said he wanted to push himself, try new things and keep learning. The early clips showed two sides of it: the Tomorrowland opening, and a stripped-back take with just his voice and a guitar.

From Tomorrowland to the full release

Garrix played the song at two of his biggest summer stages before releasing it, opening Tomorrowland with an early version and later playing the complete song at Ushuaïa Ibiza, where he has just finished the 11th year of his residency. That same Tomorrowland set also included the debut of "Fireflies," his track with U2.

He said having his own voice at the center of one of his productions is something he never thought he would do. Both "Catharina" and "This Dream Of You" are expected to appear on his second album, his first full-length since "Sentio" in 2022, so the singing is part of a bigger project and not a one-off.
