Black Coffee has won a major court battle against Maserati South Africa after a deal for a customized supercar ended without the vehicle ever being delivered.
The Johannesburg High Court ordered Maserati to pay the Grammy-winning DJ's company, Soulistic Music, R7 million, roughly $438,000, plus interest and legal costs.
The dispute traces back to 2022, when Black Coffee purchased a Maserati MC20 Coupe for around R7 million. Two years later, he agreed to upgrade to a customized MC20 Cielo worth roughly R9 million.
As part of the deal, Maserati valued his existing MC20 at R7 million as a trade-in, leaving approximately R2 million to be paid when the new car was delivered.
The problem was that the new car never arrived.
Black Coffee maintained that delivery was expected by July 2025, but production was later pushed back without a firm handover date. He eventually moved to cancel the deal and recover the R7 million tied to his trade-in.
Maserati disputed parts of that account, arguing there was no binding July delivery deadline and that the highly customized vehicle still required specifications to be finalized before production could begin.
The Johannesburg High Court ultimately sided with Soulistic Music, granting summary judgment in the company's favor and ordering Maserati South Africa to return the R7 million, along with 10.5% annual interest from August 22, 2025 and legal costs.
The amount is not a separate damages payout. It represents the value tied to Black Coffee's original Maserati and the failed upgrade deal.
For Black Coffee, what started as a plan to trade one supercar for another turned into a year-long legal dispute. He may not be getting the customized MC20 Cielo, but he is now set to recover the millions caught up in the deal.
